  1. Persona

1)

Mia, a 29-year-old architect, lives in Batu Caves, Selangor. With 5 years of professional experience being an architect, she is currently employed by a private architectural firm in Kuala Lumpur and is well-known among her colleagues for her passion for sustainable urban design. Mia typically balances lengthy workdays with cooking at home, and her weekly bulk purchasing pattern often results in leftover meals or underutilized household items. She is deeply concerned about the environmental impact of waste and firmly believes in food and item sharing as a means of achieving sustainable living.

Through her job using various software and applications, she demands minimal and interactive user interfaces that also will engage her to use it in daily life. She regularly utilizes her phone for communication and planning, but avoids apps that appear cluttered or slow. Her primary complaints when using the application are about poorly designed user interfaces that cause even simple tasks to upload and edit the item become challenging. She values her precious time and adores systems that work effortlessly with her daily routine. For her, a waste management application that promotes efficient sharing, delivers a smooth browsing experience, and supports local community participation would be both a personal and professional connection with her principles in sustainable design.

2)

Maimunah is a 50 year-old housewife living in a residential neighborhood in Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor. She often cooks in large portions for family meals and always ends up with excess meals and kitchen items. She really believes that sharing excess food or utensils can help to reduce waste management. While she isn’t very tech-savvy, she uses her smartphone regularly for browsing WhatsApp and Facebook. She acknowledges the sense of community and engagement that comes with assisting each other and she frequently assists at neighborhood events because she loves helping the community.

She hopes the waste management app will provide an efficient way to share food and reusable items with nearby users, particularly those in need. She prefers large and obvious icons, minimal text input, simple photo uploading, and GPS-based notifications for nearby users. Her pain from using the app is navigating the app with a cluttered interface. Previously she almost gave up using another application that takes too much time and is way too confusing. Another issue is lack of english and technology knowledge that make her not trust new applications easily. She gains a simple, user-friendly app that allows her to reduce household waste, but also to strengthen her relationship with the community and make her charitable efforts become more organised and efficient.

3)

Johan is a 21-year-old university student staying in Kuala Lumpur. He is actively involved in community outreach and volunteer aid programs. His routine is to help with food drives, charity events, and beach clean-ups. Johan is recognized  among his friends for having strong morals. He feels that it is important to reduce waste and help poor targeted communities by doing simple things like sharing food or useful products. Although he is still in university, his work in social engagement has taught him a lot about how trash may be turned into useful things for people who need them.

Johan is tech-savvy and always uses his phone to communicate with other activists and share volunteer experience in his social media. He prefers applications that are easy to navigate and have multiple features that can help to make a significant change in the community. But, he immediately disengaged with applications that have buggy issues and heavy advertisement because he believes that an ideal waste management should be more than a tool and it should be an alternative platform to support the volunteer aid program. A trustworthy, community-focused platform that allows him to make significant contributions by sharing more goods, supporting sustainability, and assisting those in need while assisting him in better organizing and fostering volunteer action.

  1. Scenario

Task 1: Browse and Request an Item

Maimunah just finished preparing a large pot of chicken curry for her family. She realizes that she made too much again, she wonders if someone nearby might need extra food. She opens the Olio app to see if she can share it, but her attention is caught by another listing of food instead, where someone nearby offers free fresh bread. She’s got an idea that she can also serve the chicken curry with bread for dipping as a side dish so it won't go to waste. As she clicks into the listing, the icons are large and easy to understand, and the description is written clearly. The location appears close by, which gives her confidence.

Feeling encouraged, she then taps the “Request this” button. Then, the interface of pickup time & date appears with the optional message to send. She writes a short, simple message, asking if the donor is available this evening. The app notifies her with a loud, clear sound when the donor replies. The ease of navigation, minimal typing, and large interface symbols make her feel comfortable and independent. She then goes to the location of the donor in the evening and claims the bread.

Task 2: Add New Item to Giveaway, Sell or Lend

Johan just returned from a weekend food drive organized by his university's community outreach club. While unpacking the remaining supplies, he realizes there are still a few reusable plastic containers and some canned food left over. Not wanting them to go to waste, he opens the Olio app to share them with others who may need or benefit from it. With his phone already in hand, Johan quickly  navigates to the “Add” section and selects “Give away” as the category. He takes a photo and writes a detailed description.

Before posting, he sets a pickup location and selects availability for the next 24 hours. As someone familiar with mobile apps, Johan appreciates how seamless and bug-free the experience is. He tags the item with “Aid” and includes a short message about it being part of a community initiative. Knowing the listing might help someone in need, Johan feels satisfied. For him, Olio is more than a tool, it's an extension of his mission to support sustainability and help others meaningfully.

Task 3: Like and Comment on a Post in Olio's Community

After a long day at work, Mia, an architect who’s passionate about sustainability, opens the Olio app to unwind and check what’s happening in the community. She navigates to the Community section and begins scrolling through posts some share cooking tips, others show food-saving success stories. A post about composting ideas draws her attention. She taps the “Like” icon and adds a comment complimenting the user’s eco-friendly solution.

Motivated by the discussion, Mia decides to share a short tip on reusing glass jars for kitchen storage. She uploads a photo, writes a concise caption, and posts it in the “Sustainable Living” category. She enjoys seeing real-time feedback as other users respond with reactions and comments. The community space makes her feel connected to others with similar values, and the app’s clean interface ensures it feels purposeful, not overwhelming. For Mia, this feature turns Olio into more than just a utility it becomes a sustainable community she’s proud to be part of.
